HORTENSE LE CALVEZ

What strikes one first in Hortense Le Calvez's work is the singularity of her approach to ceramics and the uniqueness of her aesthetic. This contemporary French artist's enamel work is characterised by bluish tones that echo the sea and the ocean, subjects that are omnipresent in her work.
Before focusing on ceramics, Hortense Le Calvez made a name for herself by creating underwater sculptures in Greece on her sailing boat, the Forlane 6. Today, in her studio in Brest, she works with ceramics that have a distinctly maritime character.
These ceramics also raise a societal question: why is there such a wide gap between individual understanding and collective reactions to the ecological emergency and energy issues? While the world seems to grasp the urgency, adaptive strategies are not evolving fast enough.
The sea is at the heart of her research, and her works bear witness to a society that is intrinsically linked to the oceans, yet is slowly destroying them.
